Deiny spent the first three years of his life living with his Grandma in Palmerita, a very poor, remote village far away from local health care and schools near a beautiful river, Mijo. He never knew his father, and his mother left at an early age because she wasn’t able to raise him properly. In 1998, hurricane George hit the Dominican Republic, and Deiny and his family lost everything. Their home, clothes, tools, absolutely everything. Shortly after the hurricane, Deiny’s grandmother passed away, and Deiny was forced to move into a small shack that he shared with other boy’s who also had no family left.
Because there was no one to support him, Deiny dropped out of school by the age of 10 and hired himself out for day labor to the local mountain farmers. He never had any land of his own, so he simply worked for other land-owning farmers to provide food for himself.
Despite his series of bad luck and hardships, Deiny is a remarkable man. He’s quiet, yet thoughtful. Helpful, but never a pushover. Although he didn’t complete a high level of education, he is extremely talented with electronics, and is able to repair cell phones, TV’s, tablets, and basically anything electronic. He has a uniquely natural skill for electronics even though he has spent his whole life farming with a machete. Deiny’s main goal for his future is to become better qualified in the electrical field in order to create a better life for himself around a respectable job.
In order to go back to school, however, Deiny needs money. That’s where we come in. Deiny is a natural with electronics, but he is also an extremely talented farmer. By providing Deiny with a loan of $1,600, we helped him to acquire the property he needed to create a small business around chickens.
Deiny’s loan provided him with the property, the chicken house, 360 chickens, and starter feed to keep the chickens healthy and develop a steady income for himself. He can now use this new source of income to go back to high school and eventually study electrical engineering at a higher level.
